Monterrey isn’t a single market. According to the federal delineation of Metropolises of Mexico 2020 (CONAPO, INEGI, and SEDATU), the Monterrey Metropolitan Area (AMM) has 5,322,117 residents across 16 municipalities. A patient in Valle Oriente (San Pedro), another in Obispado, and another in Apodaca may all be looking for the same specialist in different ways, and Google shows them different results.

This guide is for specialists and clinics in the AMM who want patients in their area to find them on Google, Google Maps, and AI assistants like ChatGPT, without relying only on directories or ads. The companion guide for Guadalajara is at medical marketing in Guadalajara.

In this article:

  • How Google decides which practices to show in your area of the AMM
  • What to do with your Business Profile for each location and with your reviews
  • Which pages your website needs for Monterrey and neighboring municipalities
  • How to appear in ChatGPT and allow OAI-SearchBot
  • COFEPRIS notice vs. permit, professional license, and what not to publish
  • Where to start in 30 days

# How does Google decide which doctors to show in Monterrey?

According to Google’s official guidance on local ranking, local results depend mainly on three factors: relevance (how well your profile matches what someone is searching for), distance (how close you are to the searcher or to the location they entered), and prominence or popularity (how well-known your office is, including its reviews and online presence). Google also clarifies that you can’t pay for a better local ranking.

In a metropolitan area this large, distance matters a lot: an office in Guadalupe is unlikely to appear on the map for someone searching from San Pedro Garza García, even if it’s excellent. That’s why it’s not enough to say, “I see patients in Monterrey”; you need a clear presence at every actual location—hospital, medical tower, or office—where you see patients. We explain this in more detail in Google and Google Maps visibility for doctors. If your listing doesn’t appear, also check why your office doesn’t appear on Google Maps.

# What should your Google Business Profile include at each location?

Google says profiles with complete and accurate information are more likely to appear in local searches. Its guidelines for representing your business require one profile for each actual physical location. For an office in the AMM, the basics are:

  • One profile for each actual location (for example, downtown Monterrey/Obispado, Valle Oriente in San Pedro, San Nicolás, Guadalupe, or Apodaca), with that location’s exact address and hours.
  • The correct primary category for your specialty, and secondary categories only if you practice in those areas.
  • A phone number or WhatsApp that someone answers, and a link to that location’s page on your website.
  • Real photos of the building’s exterior, the office, and the entrance; these help patients find you in areas like Del Valle or Carretera Nacional.
  • Respond to positive and negative reviews without revealing the patient’s clinical information.

Keep your NAP information consistent: use the same business name, write the address the same way, and use the same phone number on your Business Profile, website, and the directories where you appear. Discrepancies confuse Google and patients.

There’s a clear rule for reviews: Google Maps’ content policy prohibits offering incentives (payments, discounts, or free consultations) in exchange for reviews, and also prohibits asking only satisfied patients for positive reviews. You can ask all your patients to share their experience. Find more ideas in medical reviews and reputation in the age of AI.

# What pages does your website need for multiple municipalities in the Monterrey Metropolitan Area (AMM)?

Your website is the asset you actually own. For the AMM, the structure that works best combines pages by specialty or condition with pages for each actual office location:

PageWhat it’s forWhat to include
Home and physician profileTrust and authorityName, specialty, institution that issued the degree, professional license, and board certification
One page per locationLocal searches by areaAddress, map, hours, parking, directions (Valle Oriente, Obispado, etc.), and contact button
One page per condition or procedureSpecific patient questionsClear explanation, when to seek care, and what to expect at the first appointment
Frequently asked questionsAnswers AI can citeConsultation fees if you publish them, accepted insurance plans, and how to book

Don’t create pages for neighborhoods or municipalities where you don’t have an office; Google treats them as low-value content, and patients get frustrated. The full list is in what pages a physician’s website needs.

# How do you appear in ChatGPT when people search for a specialist in Monterrey?

AI assistants build their answers from what they find on the web, so they first need to be able to read your website. OpenAI explains in its crawler documentation that OAI-SearchBot helps show websites in ChatGPT search features: if you block it in robots.txt, your website won’t appear in search responses (though it may still appear as a navigation link). OpenAI recommends allowing it and, if applicable, allowing its published IP ranges. Ask whoever manages your website to check robots.txt along with the firewall or CDN.

Consistency matters next: the same name, specialty, address, and phone number on your website, your Business Profile, and the directories where you appear, plus structured data (schema) for your medical practice and office. We walk you through the process in how to appear in ChatGPT as a medical specialist.

# COFEPRIS notice or permit for medical advertising?

The Regulations of the General Health Law on Advertising (RLGSMP) apply to your website, social media, and ads. Three points that most affect digital marketing in Monterrey:

  • Article 19: Your advertising must state the educational institution that issued your degree, diploma, or certificate and, where applicable, your professional license number, in any medium.
  • Article 79: Advertising for the provision of health services requires authorization from the Ministry of Health, except for services provided individually. A clinic or hospital that advertises must review this requirement.
  • Articles 86 and 87: People practicing professions and specialties must submit an advertising notice (in practice, the corresponding COFEPRIS filing) within the five days before dissemination begins; this is not the same as the authorization under article 79.

Article 18 also applies: advertising that offers treatments whose efficacy has not been scientifically proven is not authorized. In practice: avoid promising results or cures, don’t use testimonials that suggest a treatment works the same for everyone, and don’t publish patient photos without their consent.

# Where should you start over the next 30 days?

  1. Search for your specialty on Google Maps from Monterrey, San Pedro, San Nicolás, Guadalupe, and Apodaca (and from Valle Oriente or Obispado if you see patients there), and note who appears.
  2. Complete or correct a Business Profile for each actual location, with its category, hours, photos, and NAP details consistent with your website.
  3. Check that your website lists the institution, professional license, and certification on the doctor’s profile.
  4. Create or improve one page for each location and one for your most frequently treated condition.
  5. Ask whoever manages your website to confirm that OAI-SearchBot and Googlebot aren’t blocked.
  6. Ask all your patients for reviews, without incentives, and respond to them every week.
  7. Ask ChatGPT about your specialty “in Monterrey” or “in San Pedro Garza García,” and repeat the test every month.

# Frequently asked questions

# How long does digital marketing take to show results for a doctor in Monterrey?

It depends on your specialty, competition in your area (San Pedro isn’t the same as Guadalupe), and the starting point for your profile and website. Changes to your Business Profile may appear within days; organic website rankings usually take months. Be wary of anyone who guarantees rankings: Google doesn’t allow you to pay for local rankings.

# Should I have a Business Profile for each practice location in the AMM?

Yes, if you actually see patients at each location and it has its own hours. Each profile competes in its area based on distance. Don’t create profiles for addresses where you don’t see patients: that violates Google’s guidelines.

# Do I need a COFEPRIS notice or authorization to advertise on social media?

The RLGSMP distinguishes between the two: the authorization under article 79 does not apply to health services provided individually, but the advertising notice (articles 86 and 87) does apply to professionals and specialties, and you must display the institution and professional license. Clinics and hospitals should check whether they need authorization. This is not legal advice; confirm the current filing requirements.

# Is being listed in medical directories enough?

Directories help people find you, but they don’t replace your own website and profile. Ideally, keep identical NAP details everywhere and have a website that brings together complete information about your practice.

# Can I ask patients in Monterrey for reviews on WhatsApp?

Yes, you can ask all your patients to share their experience, without incentives or asking only satisfied patients, as Google Maps policy requires.

# Should I create pages for Valle Oriente or Carretera Nacional if I don’t have a practice location there?

No. Create location pages only where you actually see patients. Mentioning neighborhoods or corridors where you don’t have a real address frustrates patients and weakens your local authority.

# Conclusion: In Monterrey, the doctor who’s easy to find in their area wins

  • Google ranks local results by relevance, distance, and prominence; in the AMM, distance makes it essential to manage each location carefully.
  • A complete Business Profile for each office, consistent NAP information, and authentic reviews are the foundation.
  • Your website needs pages for each location and condition, with your institution and professional license clearly displayed.
  • For ChatGPT, allow OAI-SearchBot and keep your information consistent everywhere.
  • Your advertising must comply with the RLGSMP: a notice or permit, as applicable, with no improper therapeutic claims.
